Kayakers Simon Brus and Eva Terčelj are returning from junior Slalom World Championships in France with silver and bronze medal. They were also only Slovenian finalist in Foix, while the rest competitors, who made it into the semifinal, did not advance to the final. Not even 17-year old kayaker Simon Brus was the best Slovenian at the championships. He was in best position after the semifinal, but then in the final Italian Giovanni de Gennaro was a bit faster than Brus and kayaker from Celje finished in second place. This is so far the biggest success for young Slovenian paddler, so he is understandably very satisfied with this achievement. “It is my first year in national team and this is my first World Championships. I have not expected to win a medal, but we trained hard for this success,” said Brus after the competition. Third place went to another Italian Zeno Ivaldi. The other Slovenian kayakers managed to get into the semifinals, where Nejc Rusjan was 22nd and Matej Poljanec 27th. Eva Terčelj added another medal to her collection. This time she was third, although she was one of the main favourites for gold medal. But six penalty seconds were too much for another gold. After she already won gold medal in junior World Championships in 2008, she had to be satisfied with third place this time. “I am pleased with bronze medal. Things did not go as I planned, because I had many touches. I touched the gate at the beginning and then the run fell apart, so my precision was not the best. But all in all, I am satisfied,” Eva Terčelj evaluated her performance in France. Without six penalty seconds, she would be in firm lead. Other Slovenian semifinalist Ajda Novak was 19th, while Nina Bizjak did not advance from heats and was 32nd. Girls were also successful in team event, finishing just under the podium on fourth place. Australian Jessica Fox was the best in both women’s kayak and canoe event. She has been successfully competing in senior events as well, especially in canoe, so this success was no surprise. In men’s canoe event Slovenia had only one representative in semifinal, where Saša Kovačič was 26th. Peter Žnidarčič (33rd place) and Luka Žganjar (37th place) finished this competition after qualification runs. Together they started also in C2, where they were 25th. In canoe event Russia won gold medal thanks to Kirill Setkin and in men’s canoe double Polish duo Filip and Andrzej Brzezinski was the best. Junior team will next compete in European Championships in Markkleeberg (from August 5th to 8th), then Ajda Novak and Simon Brus will travel to Singapore where they will participate in Youth Olympic Games, while Eva Terčelj will be part of the senior team for World Championships in Tacen. |
