Four Slovenian competitors had a chance to get into the final in the last day of World Cup in Ausgburg, but they have all failed. Benjamin Savšek, the best Slovenian canoeist of the last seasons, who hoped for a third consecutive final on World Cup races was 18th as well as Nina Mozetič in women’s kayak event. Dejan Stevanovič was 21st and Anže Berčič 22nd. Benjamin Savšek had big hopes for the last World Cup race of the season after he was second in Prague, then finalist in Spain and third after heats in Augsburg. He was among the fastest competitors at the first split time, but then he received four penalty seconds and his paddling in the bottom part of the course was also not good enough, so he finished this race at 18th position. “I am a bit disappointed, because I made many mistakes in the lower part of the course and they have only intensified towards the end, so the good result was impossible. I hoped for a good result that would bring me nice placement in overall standings in World cup, but too many things went wrong. I will have to wait for the European and World Championships, where I will try to win a medal or at least make a good run,” Savšek explained wit a disappointment in his voice. Dejan Stevanovič was 21st and Anže Berčič 22nd. Only Slovenian representative in women’s kayak event also could not get into the final. Nina Mozetič was 18th after she received six penalty seconds. Similar thing happened in heats where she had sixteen penalty seconds. Although she made some mistakes Mozetič was not unsatisfied: “I hoped that sixteen penalty seconds I received in heats were enough, but this time I made one touch less. The run was good; I seek for a comfort in a fact that I did well in hard combinations. I lost some time in two upstream gates, but otherwise I am satisfied. Penalty seconds are always crucial when falling out of the final in Augsburg, because the times of all competitors are very close to each other. The same thing happened today.” In women’s kayak German Jennifer Bongardt won in front of Slovakian Jana Dukatova and Elizabeth Neave from Great Britain. Thanks to great performance by Nico Bettge Germans won in men’s C-1 event too. Two times Olympic champion Tony Estanguet was second and another German Sideris Tasiadis was third. Now, majority of paddlers will have a short break and then the season continues with repeated European Championships in Bratislava and then in September with the most important race of the season – World Championships in Tacen. |
